Two days later ....

I stood next to Lucian’s coffin. People had started to clear away from the gravesite, and there was a man was waiting patiently to bury Lucian. I made sure Azrael bought him the top of the line coffin, as silly as that sounded. I knew how much he would bitch if he was buried in anything less than the best.

I smiled at the thought. I never realized how much I actually cared for Lucian, until he was gone. The past few days leading to this moment seemed almost unreal. I couldn’t figure out whether what I was feeling was guilt, or sadness because he was gone. I was starting to think it was both. I felt guilty that he died for me, but I was also sad. I was sad because I missed him. Deep down, I cared for Lucian. He was there for me when I was at my worst. He accepted me no matter what.

A small hand slipped into mine, pulling me from my thoughts. I looked down and smiled. Christopher smiled up at me. Azrael moved up on the other side of me. He was holding Angelica. He wrapped his arm around my waist, and pulled me close. He laid a gentle kiss on the top of my head. “He wanted whatever made you happy, Ellie.”

I closed my eyes, trying to keep my tears at bay. “I never wanted him to die.”

Azrael sighed. “There was never any other way, and he knew that. All you can do now is keep living, like he wanted.”

I nodded as I brushed a stray tear away. “I know.” I slipped my hand in his and squeezed it gently. I smiled up at him. “We will keep living ... together.”

He leaned down and brushed his lips across mine. “I love you,” he whispered.

My heart leapt at his words. The familiar feelings his love gave me was what I lived for. “I love you too,” I whispered back.

At that moment, I knew we would all be okay. We would keep living, like we were meant to. Nothing happens for no reason, and the future is not set in stone.
